With the gluten free diet skyrocketing in popularity, those in the healthcare field should know that celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disease and ingestion of gluten can lead to long term damage of the small intestine or worse.
Pharmacists need to be aware that medications containing gluten can cause harm to someone with celiac disease. Excipients used to bind medications together may contain gluten and gluten is currently not listed as an ingredient on medication labels. Pharmacists routinely ask patients if they are allergic to any medications but don’t necessarily think to ask if they are allergic to any foods. A pharmacists can play an important role in helping patients with celiac disease determine if their medications contain gluten.
As a compounding pharmacist we are able to compound medications that are gluten free. Please feel free to call Expert Compounding Pharmacy if you have any questions or comments.
